A delusion is a strongly held belief that is not adequately supported by evidence and is not ordinarily shared within the person’s cultural setting. Assessment considers how the belief formed, how firmly it is held and how it affects behaviour, wellbeing and relationships.<\/p>\n
Assessment must distinguish unsupported beliefs from genuine harassment or danger. Clinicians ask what happened, what evidence is available and whether other explanations can be considered. Anxiety, poor sleep and social isolation may increase preoccupation or make uncertainty harder to tolerate. The impact can include avoiding public places, repeatedly checking surroundings or withdrawing from trusted people. Treatment may combine medication for the underlying psychotic condition with psychological work on threat beliefs, worry and safety behaviours. Building a sense of safety and trust is often necessary before someone can comfortably examine alternative interpretations.<\/p>\n
Safety behaviours are actions intended to prevent feared harm, such as checking repeatedly or avoiding certain places. They may provide short-term relief while limiting opportunities to reassess a threat. Psychological work can examine this cycle carefully, with attention to genuine danger and consent. The aim is more freedom and less distress rather than forcing exposure to an unsafe situation.<\/p>\n
