It helps motivate planning and effort. A person may remember liking music or visiting a friend yet predict little enjoyment from doing so again. When expected reward is weak, the effort required can seem unjustified even if the activity would be pleasant once underway.

Anhedonia refers to reduced pleasure or interest in experiences that might otherwise feel rewarding. It can occur in schizophrenia, depression and other conditions. Researchers distinguish expecting pleasure, experiencing it in the moment and remembering it afterward, because these processes can be affected differently within the same person.

This pattern is relevant to negative symptoms but is not present in every person with schizophrenia. Assessment compares expectations with actual experiences and examines memory, mood and practical barriers. A brief record of predicted and experienced enjoyment may reveal a difference. Support can make future activities concrete through familiar details and manageable plans. Encouragement is most useful when it recognises genuine difficulty rather than assuming the person simply needs to choose a more positive attitude.

Anticipation draws on memory and imagination as well as immediate emotion. If future rewards are hard to represent vividly, an activity may seem less worthwhile before it begins. Concrete reminders of previous enjoyment can therefore be useful to explore. Their value should be judged by the person’s experience, without assuming that encouragement alone can correct every reward-related difficulty.

Further reading: Research record 30208377; Research record 35020936.

Anticipated pleasure is the enjoyment someone expects before an activity occurs.
