It can be reduced by anhedonia, but low participation does not necessarily mean low enjoyment. A person may want company yet avoid it because of anxiety, paranoia, exhaustion, communication difficulties or previous rejection. These different explanations require different support.

Anhedonia refers to reduced pleasure or interest in experiences that might otherwise feel rewarding. It can occur in schizophrenia, depression and other conditions. Researchers distinguish expecting pleasure, experiencing it in the moment and remembering it afterward, because these processes can be affected differently within the same person.

Assessment asks about desired relationships, actual experiences and barriers to contact. One-to-one conversation may be enjoyable even when groups feel overwhelming. Support can use familiar people, predictable settings and brief interactions chosen by the person. Relationships should not be treated as exercises imposed to demonstrate compliance. The quality of contact matters more than simply increasing its frequency. Recognising retained affection and enjoyment helps prevent the mistaken view that a person with negative symptoms is incapable of attachment or no longer values those close to them.

Social pleasure can involve closeness, shared attention or feeling understood. Different forms may be retained to different degrees. Someone may dislike crowded gatherings yet value quiet contact with a trusted person. Assessment should avoid equating sociability with a particular style of interaction and instead identify the relationships and settings that provide connection on the person’s own terms.

Further reading: Research record 30208377; Research record 35020936.

Social enjoyment is the pleasure associated with connection, conversation, affection or shared activity.
