It does not describe what percentage of one person’s illness was caused by genes. Nor does a high estimate mean that environmental factors are unimportant or that the condition cannot be treated.

Genetics influences susceptibility to schizophrenia, but inheritance is complex. Many genetic differences can contribute, and their effects interact with development and environment. A genetic association describes probability across populations, not an inevitable outcome for one person. Most findings do not provide a simple explanation for an individual diagnosis.

Estimates depend on the population, statistical model and assumptions. Family and twin studies provide one approach, while genomic studies examine measured genetic variation. These methods answer related but different questions. Heritability can change across environments because the sources of variation change. For schizophrenia, the evidence supports an important genetic contribution alongside other influences. The practical lesson is probabilistic: genetic susceptibility matters, but a person’s experiences, development and circumstances are also relevant. Heritability figures should therefore be explained carefully whenever they are used in public discussion.

A population statistic cannot divide an individual’s illness into genetic and environmental percentages. Heritability concerns variation under particular conditions, and those conditions affect the estimate. This is why a strongly heritable susceptibility can still be influenced by experience and respond to treatment. Genetic contribution and the possibility of improvement are compatible concepts rather than opposing explanations of the condition.

Further reading: National Institute of Mental Health; Nature: schizophrenia genetics study.

Heritability estimates how much variation in susceptibility within a studied population is associated with genetic differences.
