Susceptibility to schizophrenia is thought to involve complex relationships between biology, development and experience. Stress, prenatal factors and substance exposure are among the influences studied, but specific interactions can be difficult to establish reliably.

Genetics influences susceptibility to schizophrenia, but inheritance is complex. Many genetic differences can contribute, and their effects interact with development and environment. A genetic association describes probability across populations, not an inevitable outcome for one person. Most findings do not provide a simple explanation for an individual diagnosis.

Research must distinguish interaction from simple coexistence and account for confounding. Genetic influences can also affect the environments people encounter, further complicating interpretation. A finding in one sample may not generalise to another. This field therefore supports a multifactorial view rather than a simple formula for predicting illness. It should not be used to blame a person for encountering stress or a family for failing to prevent symptoms. Reducing avoidable harms and supporting health remain useful even when an individual’s genetic susceptibility is unknown.

Interaction is a statistical and biological question that requires specific evidence. Finding both a genetic association and an environmental association does not automatically demonstrate how they combine. Studies must test the relationship and examine replication. The broader multifactorial model remains useful, while claims about a particular gene interacting with a particular exposure should be presented with the uncertainty warranted by the evidence.

Further reading: National Institute of Mental Health; Nature: schizophrenia genetics study.

Gene–environment interaction means that the effect of a genetic difference may depend on environmental circumstances, or vice versa.
