This is one of the stronger biological findings in the field. It is more specific than a general claim that people with schizophrenia have too much dopamine everywhere.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter used by nerve cells to influence other cells through specific receptors. Its effects depend on the brain region, receptor subtype and timing of release. It contributes to movement, learning, motivation and hormone regulation, so describing it only as a pleasure chemical is misleading.

There is variation between individuals and illness presentations. Imaging measures are research tools and do not provide a routine diagnostic test for schizophrenia. Findings can also be influenced by methodology, medication and other factors. Some treatment-resistant presentations may not show the same pattern, suggesting that psychosis can arise through different pathways. Dopamine findings help explain the effectiveness of D2-targeting medicines, but they do not fully account for negative symptoms, cognitive difficulties or why a particular person responds poorly to treatment.

Different imaging methods assess different quantities, such as synthesis capacity, release-related changes or receptor availability. Their results cannot be substituted for one another without interpretation. Studies also compare groups with overlapping distributions. A robust average difference can therefore be scientifically important while remaining unsuitable as a stand-alone diagnostic test or an exact account of one person’s symptoms.

Further reading: Research record 31299229; Research record 25688430.

Imaging research supports increased dopamine synthesis and release capacity in parts of the striatum in many people with schizophrenia-related psychosis.
