A person may describe stiffness, discomfort or difficulty with ordinary movements. It can affect the limbs, trunk or facial movement and may be part of antipsychotic-induced parkinsonism. It is not simply reluctance to move.

Parkinsonism describes a pattern that can include slowed movement, rigidity and tremor. Antipsychotics can produce drug-induced parkinsonism through dopamine receptor effects, but other causes must also be considered. The syndrome is not identical to Parkinson’s disease, and its appearance requires assessment rather than automatic attribution to psychiatric symptoms or ordinary ageing.

Clinicians distinguish rigidity from joint disease, pain, spasticity and other movement abnormalities through examination. Timing and associated signs help identify the likely cause. Stiffness can impair dressing, walking and sleep, so its practical impact deserves attention. Severe rigidity accompanied by fever, confusion or marked physical deterioration requires urgent medical assessment because it can indicate a serious condition rather than routine parkinsonism. Medication review should be supervised. Supporters can describe observed changes, but forceful testing or assuming that more psychiatric medicine is needed may be unhelpful or unsafe.

Rigidity can be uncomfortable even when visible movement seems only mildly affected. Asking about dressing, turning in bed and ordinary tasks can reveal the burden. Examination distinguishes the quality of tone from pain-related resistance and other abnormalities. The effect on life should guide review alongside clinical signs, particularly when the person is struggling to perform activities that were previously straightforward.

Further reading: Australian medicine information; DailyMed prescribing information.

Rigidity is increased resistance when a joint is moved, reflecting altered muscle tone.
