A person may notice a clear change soon after treatment begins or exposure increases. These experiences can be biologically influenced and may feel unlike their previous appetite, making advice based only on self-control inadequate.

Weight gain can occur during antipsychotic treatment, with substantial differences between medicines and individuals. Appetite, energy balance, sedation and direct physiological effects may all contribute. The issue is not adequately explained by willpower, and changes in weight should be considered alongside glucose, lipids, physical health and the benefits of psychiatric treatment.

Assessment asks when hunger occurs, what changed and whether sleepiness or routines also affect eating. Food insecurity, emotional distress and other medicines may contribute. Support can make meals more predictable and accessible without imposing unrealistic restrictions. A dietitian may help develop a plan suited to the person’s circumstances. Appetite should be discussed as a treatment effect worth reviewing, not as a source of blame. Monitoring actual changes helps determine whether the overall medication balance remains acceptable and whether additional support is needed.

Hunger and satiety are regulated by interacting brain and body signals. A medicine-related shift can make previously adequate eating patterns harder to sustain. Describing the change specifically helps clinicians take it seriously and consider options. The person’s experience of appetite can therefore be an important early indicator, even before a large change appears in measured weight or clothing size.

Further reading: DailyMed prescribing information; Research record 17360666; Research record 15855345.

Some antipsychotics can increase hunger, food cravings or the difficulty of feeling satisfied after eating.
