Family can include relatives, partners or other chosen supporters. Involvement should respect the person’s preferences, privacy and relationships rather than assume that every family arrangement is supportive or that relatives caused the illness.

Topics can include medication effects, early warning signs, communication and available services. The person’s own account remains important alongside professional knowledge. Education can reduce blame by explaining that difficulties such as reduced motivation or unusual beliefs are not simply choices. It should also acknowledge uncertainty and variation rather than promise one course of illness. Practical examples make information usable. The aim is to support decisions and relationships, with opportunities to revisit material as circumstances change or new questions emerge during treatment and recovery.

Psychoeducation can clarify differences between a symptom, an adverse effect and an understandable response to circumstances. This makes family observations more precise and reduces unhelpful assumptions. Information is most useful when connected to actual questions and examples. It should also include strengths and recovery possibilities, avoiding a picture of illness that leaves relatives or the person unnecessarily pessimistic about the future.

Further reading: NICE clinical guideline; National Institute of Mental Health.

Psychoeducation provides understandable information about symptoms, treatment, recovery and support.
