Difficulties can arise through cognitive problems, reduced motivation, symptoms or limited opportunities to practise. Assessment should identify the specific barrier rather than assume that all tasks need to be taken over.

Psychosocial rehabilitation helps people participate in everyday life through practical support, skills and access to opportunities. It can address self-care, housing, work, education and social roles. The approach recognises that functioning depends on both individual abilities and the environment, rather than assuming that symptom reduction alone will remove every barrier to participation.

Occupational and rehabilitation approaches can simplify steps, provide prompts and practise activities in the environments where they matter. Written routines or labelled storage may reduce memory demands. Goals should reflect the person’s priorities and cultural preferences. Support can be adjusted as abilities or circumstances change. Success is meaningful when an activity becomes safer, easier or more self-directed, even if assistance remains necessary. Respectful practice avoids turning ordinary adult preferences into compliance tests and recognises existing strengths alongside areas where help is useful.

Skills practice is more likely to generalise when it occurs in relevant settings and uses the person’s actual materials or routines. A successful demonstration in a clinic may not transfer automatically to a busy home. Follow-up can identify what support makes the task reliable there, preserving strengths while reducing the specific cognitive, motivational or environmental demands that interfere with performance.

Further reading: NICE rehabilitation guideline; National Institute of Mental Health; Research record 30606273.

Daily living skills include preparing meals, managing hygiene, organising a home, using transport and handling routine responsibilities.
