Options can range from help with tenancy issues to supported accommodation or assistance delivered in a person’s own home. The appropriate level depends on preferences, abilities and circumstances rather than diagnosis alone.

Psychosocial rehabilitation helps people participate in everyday life through practical support, skills and access to opportunities. It can address self-care, housing, work, education and social roles. The approach recognises that functioning depends on both individual abilities and the environment, rather than assuming that symptom reduction alone will remove every barrier to participation.

Assessment considers affordability, safety, location, relationships and access to services. Symptoms or cognitive difficulties may create specific needs, but homelessness and insecure housing also reflect structural barriers. Support can help with applications, bills, household tasks or communication with landlords. The aim is to increase stability and choice, not impose unnecessary supervision. A suitable home can make treatment, sleep and ordinary routines easier to sustain. Housing goals should therefore be part of care rather than postponed until every symptom has disappeared or treated merely as a reward for accepting treatment.

Housing stability can support medication access, regular meals and sleep, while insecurity can disrupt all three. These links make housing part of health rather than a separate issue postponed until treatment is complete. Support should balance safety and choice, with the level of assistance based on actual needs and reviewed rather than fixed permanently by a diagnostic label.

Further reading: NICE rehabilitation guideline; National Institute of Mental Health; Research record 30606273.

Housing support addresses the conditions needed for a safe and stable place to live.
